Understanding the Value of Life

Human life begins at conception, the moment when a sperm and egg unite to form a new, genetically distinct human being. From that point forward, the unborn child begins a continuous process of growth and development. From conception onward, the preborn human  is endowed with unique DNA, different from both parents, and is biologically human.

Yes. The unborn child is a living human organism at an early stage of development. Just as infants, teenagers, and adults progress through different stages of human life, the zygote, embryo and fetus represent the very earliest stages. Development changes size, abilities, and appearance — but not the child’s humanity.

Pregnancy involves two human lives: the mother and her unborn child. Both deserve care, protection, and compassion. The pro-life perspective seeks solutions that respect the dignity of women while also recognizing that the unborn child is a distinct human being whose life also matters.

Rape is a tragic and violent crime that deeply harms women and must be condemned. The child conceived in such circumstances, however, is not responsible for the crime. The humanity and value of the child remain the same. Compassion should extend to both the mother and the child, with support, counseling, and care available to help the mother heal and move forward.

Every human life has inherent value regardless of ability, health, or stage of development. A diagnosis does not change the child’s humanity. Many families who receive difficult diagnoses still choose to love and care for their child, and they deserve compassion and support — not pressure toward abortion.

History shows that legality and morality are not always the same. Many practices once considered legal — such as slavery or racial segregation — were deeply unjust. Laws should reflect and protect fundamental human rights, including the right to life.

While the unborn child depends on the mother for nourishment and protection, the child is biologically distinct. The baby has unique DNA, is the opposite sex roughly half the time, and often has a different blood type as he or she develops as a separate human organism within the mother’s body.

Unexpected pregnancy can bring real challenges. The pro-life response emphasizes support and practical help for mothers and families. Communities, pregnancy resource centers, churches, and adoption services exist to help women navigate these situations and ensure both mother and child are cared for.

Adoption provides a loving option for women who are unable to raise a child. Many families are eager to welcome a child into their homes. While adoption may involve emotional difficulty, it can offer a life-affirming path that honors both the mother’s sacrifice and the child’s opportunity for life.

The right to life is the foundation of every other human right. Without life, no other rights can exist. Protecting the most vulnerable members of the human family — including the unborn — is essential to building a just and compassionate society.
